Obagi’s SKINCLUSION is a global awareness initiative celebrating diversity and inclusion.

The SKINCLUSION initiative represents our commitment as leaders in the skin care space to elevate the global dialogue about diversity and inclusion, and spark actions that are more inclusive and reflective of all of our beautiful differences. We’re proud of Obagi’s 30-year legacy of providing effective, science-based skin care products for all skin tones and that we were the first professional skin care company to specifically design clinical research protocols to include all six Fitzpatrick skin types.

Everyone’s skin is beautiful & unique…

Each of us has specific skin care needs based on our:

    skin tone
    skin concerns
    skin type
…& we all have a place in the Fitzpatrick Skin Spectrum
Developed in 1975 by Harvard dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, MD to categorize skin into six different types based on its response to the sun or ultraviolet light.

Skin color before exposure:
Skin reaction to sun:
SKIN TYPE VI
deeply pigmented dark brown to darkest brown
never freckles, never burns, always tans
SKIN TYPE V
dark brown
rarely freckles, almost never burns, always tans
SKIN TYPE IV
olive or light brown
doesn’t really freckle, burns rarely, often tans
SKIN TYPE III
fair to beige, with golden undertones
might freckle, burns on occasion, sometimes tans
SKIN TYPE II
fair or pale
usually freckles, often burns/peels, rarely tans
SKIN TYPE I

always freckles, always burns/peels, never tans

Obagi has been a long-time champion of diversity and is the first medical skincare brand to design its clinical research protocols to cover all six skin types across the Fitzpatrick skin spectrum – a scientific classification that identifies six different skin types according to the amount of pigment in the skin and the skin's reaction to sun or ultraviolet light exposure.
